Leadership : A real life story

Lack of leadership skills may hamper your growth and progress in your career. Explore the skills & the possibilities to develop your own leadership style.

The story goes somewhat like this:

An Outward Bounder in the USA became a successful businessman and when he happened to buy a company to expand his business, the first thing he did was to invite the divisional heads and the executives from this new company to a somewhat remote location for an extended weekend holiday.

The staff was somewhat intrigued by the invitation; nevertheless, all of them joined him there. What followed was an amazing wilderness experience for all of them.

They stayed at an adventure hut, not a hotel or a resort. No service was available to them. They were on their own. On arrival had to carry their belonging up the hill to their bunkers. The new owner surprised them by being one of them.

For the next few days they all would take up their knapsacks, go out to trek in the hills exploring the wilderness. Come back to their hut by late afternoon tired but energetic. Cook their own food, and help each other in all the chores. Sit around the fire, share their experiences, and discuss topics that cropped up.

What the owner had to say at the end of this exercise;

  • We could break down the mental barriers that existed.
  • We knew each other well.
  • We bonded well.
  • We were a team ready to take up challenges and work together back home.

The new owner as a leader could achieve something significant in a short span of few days which quite possibly might have required months or years to achieve. The leader in the Outward Bounder knew and had the trust in his ability to achieve what he had set out to achieve.

As a leader, he wanted to set up his team of leaders for success and he did it.

Leadership is all about having a vision for self, developing skills and the ability to lead. Outward Bound programs help you explore the possibilities for you to understand your own needs and requirements to become a leader. The onus is on you, the ownership is yours.
