Being assertive with self is one way of improving your commitment level and also building on your self-confidence.
Have you heard this famous Bengali song written by Rabindranath Tagore?
The song beautifully brings into focus the need to go all alone if nobody responds to your call and also encourages you to go ahead and not get discouraged, face the difficulties, fight the odds but not give up.
I am reminded of this song many times when I come across a youth who wish to join our wilderness programs, but reluctant to commit themselves because of their dependency on their friends. It’s good to be with friends, depend on them but sometimes you need to prioritize to fulfill your larger objective that will impact your life in a positive way.
Here I would like to address the youth who find themselves in such a predicament to listen to this song.
They all want to go because they have felt the need to go, but are unable to take the call all alone. Outward Bound adventures programs are precisely designed to bring individuals out of their comforts and help them face the unfamiliar situations with confidence.
You must understand that dependency affects your personality, affects your decision making and also your progress. It’s a mental block that you can’t do things on your own and you need someone you know who will support you in fulfilling your wish. You are not afraid; you are just uncomfortable thinking of joining others who are unfamiliar to you. Will I be able to cope up with strangers? Will I be able to adjust to them? Will they accept me? Can I trust them? Will they trust me?
It’s not a question of others trusting you or vice versa. It begins with how much you trust yourself and your capabilities to deal with strangers and spending time with them. And there is always a first time whenever you are thinking of doing something new or you want to explore a new territory.
You need to be a little self-assertive when you want to take the first step when the time comes. You will learn to break the barriers one by one as they emerge and start moving with confidence in the direction you want to move, to achieve what you want to achieve.
So next time when you think of going Outbound, just enroll with Outward Bound and things will start falling in place. You will not be alone. There will be many others like you. Outward Bound programs are designed to bring you out of your shell and become a winner. If wanting to win is on your mind nothing can stop you. Go ahead and enroll with Outward Bound for a life-changing experience.
